How can we be sure that Filipino nurses will stay with our organization? We have found no statistics that deal with the retention history for Filipino nurses. However, because Filipinos have an established reputation for loyalty and compassion, as indicated by their concern for their extended family, there is a high probability that they will stay with an organization that treats them fairly. As well, Filipinos certainly recognize and appreciate that by sponsoring them from their homeland to the United States, the healthcare organization has made a considerable investment on their behalf. Providing these nurses with an orientation to their new community and workplace also demonstrates your concern for their well-being. In virtually every metropolitan area there is a substantial existing Filipino community, which will also assist them in adjusting to their new environment. And finally, if the healthcare organization pays the nurses fairly and provides them with equal an opportunity for professional development, there is a high probability that a Filipino nurse will bond with the organization that they come to consider a part of their extended family. Initially, we recommend that the healthcare organization develop an employment agreement with each Filipino nurse that obligates them to stay with the organization for a period of 3-5 years. These agreements should be worked out with your attorney and should be provided to the candidates when you first agree to hire them. Further, should the nurse leave prior to the designated period, a clause in the employment agreement would obligate them to pay for all or a portion of the expenses incurred as a result of the organization’s recruitment effort.
