What is the process for recruiting nurses from the Philippines?
The process is complex, but is summarized as follows:
- A nurse needs a sponsor in the US. The employer needs to demonstrate
its sponsorship with a letter of agreement with the nurse, stating the
position to be filled and the compensation to be paid.
- The nurse then needs to pass the CGFNS clinical and English test.
Note that some states have ceased requiring the CGFNS, for it is a significant
overlap with the NCLEX-RN examination.
- With these exams completed, Phase I of the green card process can
begin (actually, the CGFNS and Phase I can be started simultaneously).
Phase I will take approximately 6 months to complete.
- Upon completion of Phase I, the applicant can submit paper work for
Phase II of the visa process. This requires an additional 6 months.
- Parallel to the Phase II green card process, the nurse is required
to successfully pass the NCLEX-RN. This licensure exam is only given
in the US or US territories. Beginning October 2004, the NCLEX will
be given in the Philippines. This will save the travel expense associated
with Filipinos traveling to Saipan or Guam to take the NCLEX-RN.
- Once the NCLEX-RN has been passed and Phase II of the green card process
is completed, the candidate can prepare to travel and work in the US.
- It is highly recommended that hospitals and nursing homes provide
a special orientation to all Filipino nurses who begin to work in the
US upon their arrival.
